If adventures in a winter wonderland are what you are looking for, go west from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. True Arctic experiences wait for our NBE bloggers in Espoo: reindeer, swimming in an ice hole in a rescue suite (refreshing, indeed!) and exotic InipiSpa hot tubs and sauna.
Lonely Planet and National Geographic Traveler have certainly got it right. Stunning nature. National parks which are sanctuaries for silence-seekers. Finland and Helsinki have recently gathered plenty of international attention as top travel destinations for 2017, and for a good cause.
The one thing that differentiates Helsinki from its capital colleagues is the nature. Helsinki is surrounded by amazing natural areas in north, east, south and west; you could call it the green capital. During the Stopover Day in the Helsinki region, the 20 January, the Nordic Bloggers’ Experience participants have the opportunity to experience Northern magical nature in Nuuksio.
The Nuuksio National Park is wild woods and lakes right on Helsinki’s doorstep, about a 30 – 40 minutes ride from the Helsinki city centre. In wintertime, you may go snowshoeing or ice-fishing, try cross-country or downhill skiing, hike, warm up by the fire or in a sauna, take a husky sledge ride, look at the stars, visit the superb Finnish Nature Centre Haltia, swim in an ice hole – or meet Santa’s helpers, the reindeer. Our bloggers will meet with Taika, Lumi, Oscar, Nella and Niila, all living in the southernmost place in Finland where you can see and feed reindeer. How cute is that?
